Laser Hair Removal
Laser hair removal is a medical procedure that uses a beam of light to reduce unwanted hair. Common treatment areas include the underarms, upper lip, chin, legs, and bikini line. However, it’s possible to undergo laser treatment on nearly any area of your body. If you have unwanted hair, laser hair removal might be right for you.
How does laser hair removal work? During the procedure, a laser will emit light, which the pigment in the hair will absorb. The light energy is then converted to heat, which damages the hair follicles (tube-shaped sacs which produce hairs). This damage will inhibit or delay future hair growth. Risk of side effects vary from person to person, but the most common side effects include skin irritation and minor pigment changes. These side effects are temporary in the vast majority of cases.
While laser hair removal will effectively delay your hair growth for long periods, it is important to note that it does not usually result in permanent hair removal. Multiple treatments will be necessary at first, and maintenance treatments might be needed down the line. However, many patients report great satisfaction in only having to do touch-ups as opposed to their formal hair maintenance routine. Laser hair removal procedures can save you time and money – and the benefits of not having to worry about your unwanted body hair are priceless!
Laser hair removal is generally most effective for people with light skin and dark hair, though developments in treatment are ongoing.

Laser Hair Removal – FAQ’s
How Many treatments will I need?
The average person usally needs somewhere between 6 to 9 treatments. More treatments may be needed for excessive hair growth. Determining factors are the amount of hair, the thickness, the color (the darker the better, does not work on blond or gray hair), and the laser setting that can be tolerated.
How often do I need to have the treatments?
3 to 6 weeks apart, depending on the body area, and the hairs growth cycle.
What type of reactions will I see after the treatment?
Redness, small bumbs and sometimes swelling can occur and possibly last up to 2-3 days, but most only experience slight pinkness for about 15 min.
Does it hurt?
It can be slightly painful. The feeling can be described as a hot rubber band snap but is very tolerable and usually less painful than waxing. The laser has a built in patented cryogen feature that coats the skin with a topical anesthetic; which helps with the pain and a cooling agent which makes it safe for all skin types. Also, the setting can be lowered to decrease the pain, but the higher it is tolerated the more effective the treatment. In addition we use ice packs to help numb the skin, and topical anesthetic is available (LMX).
Do I have to let the hair grow in between treatments?
No, the hair must be cut or shaved the day before the treatment and can be shaved or trimmed as many times as you like, also there is no waxing, plucking, or bleaching allowed in between treatments. However, even after the first treatment the growth will slow and come in less course, requiring less maintenance.
When will I notice a difference?
After the first treatment there will be a reduction in the amount of hair and the growth will slow and come in less course and thick. However, after the treatment the hair goes through a 3 week shedding process, so the reduction will not be fully noticed until the new hair growth comes in.
Is it safe for all skin types?
Yes, the Candela gentle Yag laser is approved for all skin types and tanned skin. However, tanning should be avoided after treatments have started, and an spf 35 should be used durning sun exposure, as hyperpigmentation can occur, but in rare instances.
